4 Simple Steps to Avoid Back to School Germs: GIANTmicrobes Review + Giveaway

* GIANTmicrobes sent me the below items to facilitate my review. My opinions are 100% my own and may differ from yours.

Back to school time is exciting for both parents and kids alike. Parents rejoice in the extra free time they have while the kids are away, and students bring home knowledge and new memories (and, regrettably, homework.) Sometimes little ones bring home an unwelcome guest or two, in the form of an illness, which can really wreak havoc when spread across a whole family- eek!

The most common illness-causing baddies are various strains of two viruses: the Common Cold and the Flu. Did you know that there are over 250 different variants of the common cold? Yikes! GIANTmicrobes, adorable plush microorganisms magnified over 1,000,000x their actual size, are a wonderful educational tool in teaching kids about these pathogens and their prevention.  We received the Common Cold (Rhinovirus) liquid soap dispenser, plush, and the Flu (Influenza) plush to review:

The Common Cold Liquid Soap Dispenser and Plush

While you can't control what germs you or your spawn are exposed to, you can minimize your chances of becoming infected with a few simple hygiene steps!

GIANTmicrobes Common Cold Liquid Soap Dispenser

     1. Wash your hands like it's going out of style.
According to the CDC, frequent hand washing is the single most effective method in preventing communicable illnesses. Wet hands with soap and water and thoroughly scrub hands and forearms for 15-20 seconds, or about how long it takes to hum the song "Happy Birthday To You" twice.

     2. Don't share personal items like cups, towels, and toothbrushes.

As a mom, I often share my drinks with my munchkin. Big no-no! Germs can transfer from person-to-person via saliva and other bodily fluids. Encourage your kids not to share drinks or food at school, too.

     3. Avoid touching your mouth, nose, or eyes before washing your hands.

These are entry points for germs to get into your body, so keep yo' dirty hands off!

     4. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue (or the inside of your elbow) when coughing or sneezing.

This way germs are caught in the tissue or area of your body that is less likely to make it to your mouth, nose, or eyes.

Rhinovirus Hangtag

There are over 150 different varieties of GIANTmicrobes , including plush and vinyl toys, mugs, neck ties, and even a hand washing kit! Each GIANTmicrobes plush comes with an informational hangtag with facts about the microbe and it's history and prevention. I have a whole family of GIANTmicrobes in my collection, Influenza and Rhinovirus now join the ranks of my Gigantic Red Blood Cell, Penicillin, Ecoli, Rotavirus, STD/Heartburned box, White Blood Cell, and Christmas Wreath and Tree boxes. We love them all!
